Details regarding the Scrabble® Champions Tournament will be released today (Friday May 17th). This information will be delivered by Mattel and is coming directly from their Californian base. As a consequence of the time difference, we fully expect this to be made public in the UK and the rest of Europe through this evening.

As soon as the Company officially release the Championship details to the press, Mattel’s comments will immediately be uploaded to this forum, so please keep checking here for further information.

With the weekend’s imminence, we would like to highlight that all queries should continue to be directed to this forum, where we will endeavour to answer them via this platform.

Thank you for your patience.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Scrabble® Champions Tournament Set to Debut in Prague

Championship Event Evolves to Bring Exciting New Challenges and Formats to Scrabble® Players

EL SEGUNDO, CA (May 17, 2013) Prague is set to play host to The Scrabble® Champions Tournament, an exciting new annual tournament that brings together the best Scrabble® players.

Formerly known as the World Scrabble® Championships, The Scrabble Champions Tournament will take place at the Andel’s Hotel, Prague from December 3rd – December 8th, with a guaranteed prize fund of $25,000.

The event celebrates top ranked players and encourages up-and-coming Scrabble game enthusiasts to take part in a refreshing new format.

“We are pleased to be creating an exciting new event that will not only create a great tournament for the very best players but will also encourage new players to get involved and challenge themselves in a fun and friendly format,” comments Elizabeth Grampp, Global Marketing Director, Mattel Games.

“2013 is a year of evolution and enhancement for our Scrabble brand. Not only do we have a brand new look, new variations, and new community initiatives launching, but our commitment to the live Scrabble tournament scene is evolving thanks to our partnership with key territory associations and leading event management consultancy, Mind Sports (International) Ltd. It is an extremely exciting time for all Scrabble players," stated Grampp.

Honoring players that have competed for the past two years for a place at the prestigious event, The Scrabble Champions Tournament will this year adopt the same entry procedure as the past World Scrabble Championships. The newly created Elite Tournament is by invitation only and will recognize the qualification places pre-assigned to each participating country, with over 100 places going to the best, spanning five continents.

For up-and-coming players, an Open event has been created to sit within The Scrabble Champions Tournament. This event welcomes new players to the tournament for the first time and encourages broader participation.

The Elite and Open events within The Scrabble Champions Tournament will be conducted in English, with a series of language-specific side events set to take place as part of the annual Prague Mind Sports Festival Scrabble schedule, which takes place around The Scrabble Champions Tournament. This gives players from non-English speaking countries the opportunity to compete in their native languages and again encourages new players to test their skills, regardless of their knowledge of the English dictionary.

Hi !
Great news from Mattel!
Looking forward to meet you all in Prague.

It would be great if French is "Scrabble International Language" A, B or C.
French players do play competitive "Classic" Scrabble, not only Duplicate... It would be great if French Scrabble is tempting Mattel/MSI.
I would be delighted to help it happen.

This is great news! Thank you, guys! I shall return to Prague far sooner than I'd anticipated!

Just out of curiosity, are there any plans for an earlier Scrabble event during the Festival, or is it just necessary to arrive for the main event? (just in terms of buying plane tickets from the states)

Currently, none. If there was enough interest we would consider it but I would recommend getting the current full week in the schedule if you are purely a Scrabble fan - 2-3 days to swallow the jet lag, visit Prague and 5 days to enjoy loads of Scrabble!

@Hervé and Horacio: I will send you a private message about French / Spanish.

I've been informed of a few registration issues on the Prague website when attempting to register for the Scrabble events.

If you come across an error message, please can you copy the text onto the Forum in order for us to fix the issue, alternatively please give me a call on +441752 231810.

Thanks for your patience and co-operation.

Hi Emma and all at MSI,

Just a few suggestions:

A qualifying tournament would attract more people and those who don't qualify for Elite would probably stay for Open. This needs to be decided on extremely soon, this week I suggest, so people can get the time off work and book their flights too.

I'm hoping there will be a hundred players in the Elite and a hundred in the Open, though it's early days yet. This should be the biggest world Scrabble event ever! Perhaps meal times should be staggered so that the players don't all go at the same time, causing congestion and delays.

There needs to be several Tournament directors or helpers, bearing in mind the number of people and the evening events. Asking for volunteers from now may be a good idea.

Showing a list of players attending helps to attract more players and I suggest you start this now. Although this was done for Prague last year, for some reason it wasn't done for Vienna or Marbella and the numbers were down.

Visas have traditionally been a problem and I cannot emphasise enough the need to start early.

(For those thinking of going, Prague is a beautiful city, the people are friendly and speak good English generally.)

We need to increase the number of people using this forum and I suggest you place fortnightly updates on world-scrabble etc. to remind them about the tournaments, update on progress and keep encouraging them to use this forum.

Best wishes,

Elie Dangoor
